Our latest special project is an homage to Studio 1, the iconic and pioneering sound system and record label.  Often called “The Motown of Reggae”, Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One was more than just a heavyweight reggae label, it was a driving force for the entire genre and culture over the course of several decades – through the ska and rocksteady era up through dancehall.  Dodd’s roster reads like a “who’s who” of the most important of reggae history – Lee “Scratch” Perry, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Burning Spear, Toots and the Maytals, Horace Andy, Dennis Brown, The Gladiators and far too many to continue to name here.  Though Studio 1 was formally known as a label and sound system, it is regarded as a major source from which reggae culture grew and prospered.  And, as such, it has also had tremendous influence on hip-hop and pop culture of today.

We chose some key images from the Studio 1 story on which to build this group of product – including iconic album art from The Wailing Wailers, Freddie MacGregor, Michigan & Smiley and Lone Ranger (who cut a dub plate version of his classic “Automatic” for our Soundcloud in honor of this project).  In addition, we also created a series of items that feature a birds-of-paradise tropical print, inspired by both the collaboration with Studio 1 and this season’s “Island Life” theme.

The lookbook for the 10.DEEP x Studio One collection is viewable here, with the product available at our webshop.
